Oh what a Wednesday

Sorry for the late post. Lots to do after school today.
Math: We finished going over our test (word problem today) and took a quiz over factors and multiples to be sure that everyone understood them now. (Since the test scores weren't the greatest, I wanted to be sure and reteach the material). Everyone did really well on the quiz today and those scores are already in Infinite campus and will go home tomorrow with your child's test stapled to it.

Reading: We started talking about elements of a story and wrote a letter to a fictional person using our vocabulary words. No HW
Writing: We did not have writing because of the President's Education Speech.
Science: We read an article about how people effect the ecosystems around us and answered questions about it, including a short answer on what we would personally could do  help protect the environment.

Wednesday Folders went home today and in them were progress reports. This are simply that, reports to show you where your child is in class. This grade can go up or down. If you have any questions please feel free to email me. Also, be sure to check grades on Infinite Campus because those are updated frequently.

Have a great afternoon!

Math: We looked at our tests from last week and started going over them in class. We will continue going over them tomorrow. We are correcting them as we go to be sure that everyone truly understands how to do it. After grading them I realized that there was still a lot of confusion about factors and multiples. We will be doing a short review quiz this week and it will also go towards their test grade.

Writing: Writing reviews about the UK Opera and reviewing common and Proper nouns. This will be homework if it not finished in class.
**If you have not returned the Creepy Crawling Science paper please do so ASAP!

Friday

Today was a rainy indoor kinda day. We had a great performance from the UK Opera this morning. They put on a show about Little Red Riding Hood's Unusual Day. The kids loved it (and so did the teachers!)

We also had book buddies with Ms. Shreffler's class. Ask your child about their book buddy.
We reviewed our math facts and then this afternoon gave directions to a place in Kentucky using relative and absolute location for geography.

During writing this week we have been writing poems about diversity. Today, we rewrote our poems on leaves and added them to our Poet Tree. I've added a picture of this and hopefully you are able to see it! It looks great and I am so proud of all of the students hard work. A few of us did not finish our leaves and therefore took them home to finish over the weekend.

I am hoping to send home science tests and math tests next week. Be on the lookout for them. Reading logs are due October 6. Your child should be reading 20 minutes every night.

Wednesday

I am so sorry for not posting everyday. I keep getting side tracked. :(   Yesterday, you should have received a very important letter about Ms. Borders taking a leave of absence. That is all of the information I have as well, so if you have any questions, you may contact the front office. We had our MAP science test yesterday with Ms. Rowe and scores for all three tests will be coming home shortly, once everyone finishes up.
Progress reports will be going home next Wednesday. This is a great way to check your child's progress at school.

Science: We took our unit science test yesterday and as soon as I get finish grading them I will send them home in your child's take home folder. We started discussing ecosystems today!
Reading: We are only switching for reading on Monday and Thursday of this week because MAP testing. We will not have a spelling test this week for the same reason.
Math: My class completed their math test today and I hope to have them graded and back to the class tomorrow. I will send them home with the students and let them correct any mistakes for 1/2 points back. For example if they miss 8 points, they can correct the questions and gain 4 of them back. :)
Writing: We are writing poems in writing about diversity. These will be added to our Poet-tree this week.  Pictures to come Friday afternoon!

Another fun Friday!

Math: We are reviewing multiplication and played a round a "I have, who has".
Science: We are now book buddies with Ms. Shreffler's 3rd grade class. Ask your child about their buddy.
Reading: No hw
We discussed Saturday being Constitution day. They have an extra credit question to answer for Monday: Who is known as the "Founding Father" of the Constitution?

We also had a community building activity from Mrs. Moses. We played Emotion Charades. Each student had a turn at showing an emotion without making any sounds or talking while the rest of the class had to guess how they felt. We really enjoyed this and it led to a great conversation about dealing with our emotions in constructive ways.

FYI: 4th grade has a release day on Monday and so I will not be at school because of training. We will have a substitute but I know our class will have a wonderful day.
We will be taking our Science test and the science portion of the MAP test on Tuesday.

Have a great weekend!

Busy Busy Busy

Reading: Choose a story or book that you know well and complete the "What if" sheet. They are to change the ending of the story (which should change the theme or moral of the story)  and describe the new theme.  We took our spelling test today as well.

Math: No homework. We will be taking our test on Tuesday of next week. I will also be sending home multiplication logs starting next week. More info to come soon.

Science: We had guidance today with Mrs. Moses.

Writing: We are discussing diversity and each table to parts of an article today about diversity. Ask your child what they found most important about their section.

We will also start Book Buddies tomorrow! :) :)

Oops! Where did Monday go?

Sorry folks! I am not sure how this blog escaped me yesterday after school but it did. :(

We took our MAP Reading test today and everyone worked really hard. They stayed focused and took their time, which is so important. Because of the test we did not switch for reading today. Miss Layton's class has the test tomorrow so we will not be switching then either. We did have our regularly scheduled reading class yesterday and will again on Thursday.

In science we are discussing adaptations and today we learned about different types of bird beaks and came up with some examples of each. We will have our Unity and Diversity test on Friday!

Math today included reviewing our homework and factors. We split into smaller groups and discussed Composite and Prime numbers. (Prime numbers only have 2 factors: 1 and itself) (Composite have many factors)
Homework tonight is page 24 and 25 in the workbook and also review worksheet number pg. 37 if it wasn't finished in class.

In writing this week we have paused our personal narratives (per Ms. Borders) and began working on the PTA Reflections piece. We are to define what diversity means. We will interviewing our classmates and then soon be interviewing parents (so be ready! ) :)

PE tomorrow
No orchestra on Thursday due to Music test.
Also, my reading class will have a spelling test on Thursday using the vocab words from our story this week.  The vocab words will be the the left of this page!

Friday! Oh, how you never cease to surprise us.

We had a very exciting day from start to finish. First thing this morning we had a dumpster dive in Ms. Layton's room with some folks from Bluegrass Pride. They went through our trash and recycling and made sure that we understood what could go in each container. During their presentation the lights went out! Thankfully, we had emergency lights that came on so they were able to finish their time with us. Our students did an excellent job of going with the flow and we were all very proud of them!

We continued learning and although the lights were out, we were still able to play and math multiplication game called Sink or Swim. I love playing this game with students because it allows them to practice their multiplication but also gets them moving! I also read to the kiddos today from our new class read aloud. We are reading Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine.

In math we played multiplication bingo. I am seeing that a lot of our students really need to practice their multiplication facts. This is a skill they really need to master and flashcards work really well for this. If you need help locating some please just let me know. I will be happy to send some home.

This afternoon we watched a video and read a scholastic book online about the events of September 11th. The 10th anniversary is on Sunday and I bet your child can tell you something they learned today about it. There were lots of questions and more than I could possibly answer at the end of the day. So you may be getting lots of questions about it this weekend! :)
**No homework today! Have a relaxing weekend!
Next week:
*Book Fair
*Grandparents' Week (grandparents are invited to each lunch with their grandchildren)
*We have Library on Monday
*Please be sure to sign your child's planner each night!

**Pictures to come next week of our Life Cycle of a Beetle (The students worked in pairs and named their beetle while also showing it's life cycle.  They were pretty creative!)

Oh, how we loved labor day!

I hope you had a wonderful 3 day weekend. I know I enjoyed having an extra day to sleep in. :)  Today's schedule was a little different due to pictures this morning and then MAP testing. We will not be switching for reading this week due to testing. We will still have reading but with our homerooms instead. If your child is interested in Spanish club and has not brought back the permission slip it is due tomorrow!!

Friday

We have had a great Review Friday!

This morning in our writer's notebook we wrote letters to our parents describing what we would like to do over this 3 day weekend. *Ask you child about what he or she wrote. :)
Also, we played a math game called "I have, who has?" It helped us with our multiplication facts and also our listening skills.
In science, we finished our animal adaptation cards and played a matching game with them. After that we had to illustrate an animal and describe its adaptations.
Geography today involved a mystery and we had to use absolute and relative location clues to solve it.
**Please be sure to sign your child's planner every night.
** We will be taking the MAP test on Tuesday and also have school pictures! It will be an exciting day. Because it is a short week and we have the MAP test next week, my reading class will not have spelling words. :)

No homework for my kiddos tonight. Have a great weekend! :)
